South Africans discover the Maldives

The Maldives Tourism Promotion Board (MTPB), together with local tourism companies, have been busy selling “The sunny side of life” to South Africans at the INDABA 2010 trade fair in Durban, South Africa.

According to the MTPB, more than 13,000 visitors passed through INDABA’s turnstiles by the end of the third and final day of the fair, which ended on May 11 . The main focus of the MTPB stand at the fair this year was to promote the Maldives as a contender in the “New7Wonders of Nature” campaign.

Fathimath Afra, Marketing Executive at the MTPB, tells Maldives Traveller that six local companies participated in the fair and that they distributed flyers and gave information to encourage visitors to vote for the Maldives in the “New7Wonders of Nature” campaign.

Last year, the Maldives had welcomed more than 655,800 visitors, of which more than 5,000 were from African countries; a market share of 0.8 percent.

INDABA is one of the largest tourism marketing events on the African calendar and it showcases the widest variety of South Africa’s best tourism products, attracting international visitors and media from across the world. INDABA is owned by South African Tourism and organised by Kagiso Exhibitions and Events. For two years in a row, INDABA has won the award for Africa’s best travel and tourism show from the Association of World Travel Awards.
